Loneliness and lack of communication suffered by elderly people can entail sad consequences. Scientists say that the fact that their children, grandchildren or other relatives don’t need them may result in pensioners’ death. It’s better to live alone but have at least some communication with the relatives rather than actually live with the relatives and feel their indifference.
Lack of communication shortens life, but scientists haven’t yet been able to analyze these two factors and the connection between them. But recent research has shown that lack of social activity gradually ruins every elderly person’s life. And it doesn’t depend on whether a person lives alone or not. One of the British newspapers has published a report on social isolation and premature death as a result of that. For seven years the author of the research Jane Wardle together with the colleagues has been studying the forms of 65 000 of the British who are older than 50.
The experts have analyzed the level of social isolation of every person, how often the relatives visit elderly people and communicate with them. And the specialists were at a loss: loneliness increases the risk of premature death by 19 %, while social isolation – by 22 %! Scientists think that elderly people can live happily provided they have daily communication with their relatives.
